Dawsonville Highway–McEver Road Connectivity Study
Dawsonville Highway is a busy corridor in the City of Gainesville that serves multiple functions. For local travelers, it provides a connection between residential and commercial development. The localized traffic is competing for limited roadway capacity with regional traffic traveling through this area to locations including downtown Gainesville, Dawsonville, Cumming and Dawson and Forsyth Counties. The Dawsonville Highway and McEver Road area in particular has been experiencing an increase in traffic congestion due to increased growth and development.
Since the 2015 update of the Gainesville-Hall Regional Transportation Plan, several steps have been taken to address traffic and safety on Dawsonville Highway, including the installation of concrete medians preventing left hand northbound turns from McEver Corners onto Dawsonville Highway, extension of the left-hand turn lane onto Green Hill Circle and incorporating the traffic signals into the City’s Intelligent Transportation System. The Dawsonville Highway-McEver Road Connectivity Study will focus on traffic flow through the commercialized intersection as well as mobility and connectivity improvements. This study will provide recommendations for intersection improvements and/or potential street connections for alternate routes and provide a prioritization of projects for implementation of improvement.
Purpose of the Connectivity Study
- To study existing and future needs associated with vehicular travel, traffic and congestion within the study area
- To assess current and proposed transportation projects and develop recommendations for alternatives options to improve mobility and connectivity within the study area.

The City of Gainesville and the Gainesville-Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization (GHMPO) plan to have two open house public meetings during this study to provide information to and gather feedback from the public regarding the Dawsonville Highway–McEver Road Connectivity Study. At these meetings, the project team will share existing and future conditions inventory data for the study area and receive input from the public regarding existing issues and concerns. The first of the two public open house meetings was held:
